INDIGENOUS PROFESSIONALS

End E 5.1

The Association's strategic end to increase Indigenous professionals End E-5.1, was adopted to ensure that practitioners in the professions reflect the diversity of the public.

Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba mandate toward equity and representation must be driven by partnerships with Indigenous and non-indigenous organizations, groups, and communities. Connections to Indigenous and non-indigenous communities serve to build and strengthen equitable partnerships and benefit from valuable Indigenous worldviews. Consciously incorporating Indigenous perspectives into industry workplaces of our corporate, public, and academic sectors will lead to better solutions that could not have been realized in their absence.

Indigenous Professionals Initiative Coordinator

The mandate of End E-5.1 is guided by the work of the Indigenous Professionals Initiative Coordinator, within the Department of Equity & Representation. The initial focus of work for the Coordinator is:

  • to increase the numbers of Indigenous practitioners in engineering and the geosciences by identifying and developing strategies to remove barriers to access for Indigenous engineers' and geoscientists;
  • support Indigenous youth participation in existing programs designed to encourage and support them to enter engineering and geoscience fields of study;
  • the development of an environmental scan and strategic operational/action plan for the Initiative;
  • to develop partnerships, collaboration opportunities and increase visibility and raise awareness of the Association in the community through engagement with local Indigenous organizations and community groups;
  • to increase understanding among Association members, chapters, working groups, and staff on the following:

Indigenous Professionals Initiative Committee (IPIC)

The Coordinator will also work to build the stakeholder membership of the Association's existing Indigenous Professionals Initiative Committee (IPIC) to include members who can provide guidance in the areas of education, student support, traditional knowledge, and practising engineers and geoscientists to guide the strategies toward of End E-5.1.

Indigenous engineers and geoscientists are invited to make a self-declaration. Please indicate this preference in your online member profile or by submitting the Canadian Indigenous Self-Declaration Form (PDF) to the office.
